The older Jesenice residents recall various wonderful childhood moments, part of which was playtime.
“We used counting rhymes for certain games. We sang a lot, sometimes just for fun or while sledging or when swinging on swings,”
remembers local resident Iva Gasar, née Muhič. A chestnut tree that still grows today between the tower blocks opposite the park is visible in the photo.

Easter tradition of God scaring, 1928 (D. Prešeren, photographic library of the Upper Sava Valley Museum)
Religious holidays were also part of the Jesenice residents’ social life. In the week before Easter when they tied up the church bells, they used to “scare God”. Local resident Janez Pšenica recalls this Easter custom:
“It started on the Wednesday and continued on Holy Thursday and Friday, every day at the same time. When we heard the rattle from the bell tower at three o’clock, we started pounding on the boxes and barrels. We hit them until they were broken up in smaller pieces, and at the end, we gathered them up for the Saturday bonfire.”

Setting up a “šranga” barrier for Zora Hafner’s wedding, 1978 (F. Hafner, photographic library of the Upper Sava Valley Museum)
Adela Burnik, née Baloh, remembers:
“For every name day we gathered at the house of the person’s whose name day it was and banged pot lids. Whenever someone got married, a “šranga” barrier was made. At the barrier, payment for the bride was demanded. There used to be shindigs all the time! They were organised by craft workers, firemen, etc. Every society had its shindig. Everyone knew everybody and all the societies went to the shindigs thrown by other societies.”
